Children of today are the citizens and leaders of tomorrow. A society which can take care of its
children today, is taking care of its tomorrow. The concept of child rights and protection is
comprehensive and total in VIKASANA. The rights of the child are legal, social and cultural.
The right of the child begins with the ‘right to be born’. The manifestation of this right is in the form
of the ‘rights of the girl child’. The legal rights and protection of the child is governed by national
laws and legislations on child protection and child rights, subjected to overall governance of
UNCRC (United Nations charter on rights of the child).
Child rights in VIKASANA have three manifestations. First is ‘age appropriate growth and
development of the child’. This development is both physical and cognitive. Second is ‘age
appropriate learning, academic education and accreditation for the child’.
The age appropriateness in educational accreditation is completion of class 8 by 14 years and completion
of class 10 by 16 years. Third is ‘skills for productivity at the age of 18 years’
Child protection includes awareness to adults and members of the community about the rights and
entitlements of the child.
Community development organizations (CBOs) such as self help groups
are delegated the responsibility of monitoring the ‘social identity of student for the child as means
for social security’.
The alternate home program of VIKASANA provides alternate home care for children who do not
have the security of their biological homes. This is for children with situations such as: no parents,
unwanted children, broken homes and non- functional families and children under vulnerability of
violence and trafficking.
VIKASANA is a licensed agency for child adoption. This provides option of alternate parents,
families and home for children who are devoid of their biological support systems
Child help line run by VIKASANA covers children in violence and vulnerability. This is
supplemented by women help line with specific focus on rights of children in case of family and marriage disputes
